Kwanzaa Kitchen Staff

 

Janis Evans, Program Coordinator, has been a volunteer since 1994. She provides her special touch with the pancakes.  She began attending Saint George's Episcopal Church in 1982 as a graduate student at Howard University and later became very active in outreach ministry.  She is currently Outreach co-chair of Saint George's.  She is a licensed counselor by profession in the District of Columbia.  She considers volunteer work and counseling as ministries for the healing and promotion of good spiritual well-being for those in need of her service.  She is married to Gregory Evans, president of the Men of Saint George's.

Tonja Lindsey, Assistant Program Coordinator, has been a volunteer since 1996.  Among her many other duties with the Kwanzaa Kitchen, she is the head egg cook and maintains the organization's web site.  Tonja is a native of Washington, D.C. and currently works for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  She attended and graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) receiving a BS in Computer Science.  Besides volunteering with the Kwanzaa Kitchen, she is a mentor at Hine Jr. High School in D.C., coaches youth basketball, and plays team tennis.

Kenya A. Smith, Program Treasurer, is an inaugural member beginning her participation in 1992.  She was born on June 29, 1970 at Columbia Women’s hospital in Washington DC.  She was raised in Indianapolis, IN.  In 1988, she entered Howard University where she studied Psychology and Chemistry.  She received a BS in Psychology in 1992.  In the later part of 1994, Kenya began attending St. George Episcopal Church, and she started working with the Kwanzaa Kitchen.  She continued to do so as she  obtained  a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from American University.  In 1996, she relocated to the Midwest to pursue a career in college recruitment at selective colleges.

In June of 2001, Kenya moved back to the District of Columbia.  Currently, she is Director of College Counseling at Edmund Burke School, an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church and Treasurer of the Kwanzaa Kitchen.  In her free time, Kenya enjoys all types of music, cooking, dancing and life itself.  The Kwanzaa kitchen has been a source of fulfillment and inspiration to her.

June Foster, Program Secretary, has been a volunteer since 1994.  She is the creative genius of the Kitchen.  She is also an active member of St. George's serving on several committees.  She is the wife of  Sam Foster and  mother of four.

Roger Hicks is a native Washingtonian born at Freedman's Hospital and raised in the Fort Dupont area in Southeast Washington. He attended Archbishop John Carroll High School as a member of the Class of 1985 and he graduated from the School of Engineering of Howard University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is a member of the Psi Nu Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and has been a volunteer of the program since 1993.  Currently, Roger is a Sr. Engineer with PEPCO. 

Roger enjoys helping individuals at the kitchen and in his spare time he jogs, landscapes and enjoys working with his hands. He is also involved with the Adopt-A-Highway program and several other programs through his fraternity.
