KWANZAA KITCHEN

St. George's Episcopal Church

160 U Street, N.W.

Washington, DC  20001

The St. George's Episcopal Church breakfast program began on November 11, 1992. The  purpose of the program is to unite the church community with that of the surrounding community so that everyone can be nourished physically and spiritually in the name of Jesus. At the initial breakfast 45 patrons were served. Today an average of 250 are served.

The St. George’s Episcopal Church breakfast program was inspired by the Black Panther’s breakfast program of the late 1960's. Their program addressed spiritual and social issues in California. On August 19, 1996, the St. George’s Episcopal Church breakfast program evolved into the Kwanzaa Kitchen, a vibrant, non-profit, Christian business. Kwanzaa is Swahili for first harvest.
